STUDY OF MOON

(N.Z. Press Association)

KAITAIA, May 8.

Observations which may help to determine the exact shape of the moon were made successfully at Kaitaia at 2 a.m today by a team led by Mr C. B Michie, a Kaitaia astronomer.

The observations, made at the request of the Royal New Zealand Astronomical Society, were expected to cover the grazing occulation of the moon by the star Theta Oppiuchii, but data supplied by the observatory at Mount Palomar in California had placed the line of sight a mile or so too far south. As a result the star was eclipsed.

The University of Canterbury has failed twice with similar observations as has a Gisborne party. The Kaitaia observers completed their work a few minutes before cloud covered the moon.
