TEACHER CHOSEN
New Lynn Candidate (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 8. The Labour Party candidate for New Lynn in the coming election is Mr J. L. Hunt, aged 27, a teacher at Kelston Boys’ High School, He was chosen from 15 people who sought the nomination at a selection meeting on Saturday. The sitting member, Mr H. G. R. Mason, recently withdrew his nomination.
The selection panel announced its decision at 1 a.m. after each of the nominees had addressed the panel and party members. Mr Hunt has taught at Kelston Boys’ High School for nearly five and a half years. He was educated at Palmerston North Boys’ High School, Auckland Grammar School and Auckland University, where he graduated master of arts with honours. He has been president of the Prince's street branch of the Labour Party for the last three years. He is a former radio “quiz kid” and in 1963 toured South-east Asia with a Rotary group of young New Zealanders.
He is secretary of the Auckland Secondary Schools’ Cricket Association and is a keen debater.
