Cleary Breaks Tabak Record
J. H. Cleary (Papanui) broke the Mairehau Novice Wheelman’s Club’s course record in a race for former members of the club held on Saturday. The circuit is bounded by Winters, Hills, Prestons and Grimseys roads.
One of three cyclists off scratch, Cleary caught all but one rider in front of him and set a time of nil 54sec. The old record of lOmin 26s : was established by the Empire Games nominee, T. J. Tabak (Avon), when he was a member of the novice club fa 1962.
Cleary also took fastest time in the Papanui’s club race on Saturday afternoon, out-sprinting R. D. Mann. A feature of Avon’s 20 miles race for the V.B. Trophy was the defeat in the sprint of Tabak by both M. W. litoiff and D. Jones. Litoiff took fastest time. Members of the Christchurch club competed for the Stanley Cup. Results:—•
