AUCKLAND, May 8. The police today had found no trace of the historic cannon stolen from in front of the Auckland public library newspaper room in High street on Friday night Thieves ripped away the heavy wire attaching the bronze cannon to its wooden cradle and dragged It across the grass to the road. Police believe it would 1 have taken several men to shift the cannon, which was displayed with two )
gunmetal cannons originally from the Old Colonists’ Museum. The theft was discovered by library staff when they arrived at work on Saturday morning. A plaque on the side of the library building says that one of the cannon was from the wreck of the Boyd in 1609. Another formed part of the defences of McConnell’s ship-building yards at Horoeka and the third was from the Osprey, wrecked at Herekino in 1846.
