Telephone Hoax

(New Zealand Press Association)

HAMILTON, May 6.

A hoaxer offered free trips to Fiji on behalf of station IXH to listeners who could identify a record played over the telephone yesterday. The hoaxer telephoned Hamilton housewives, pretended he was an announcer and played a record over the telephone. If they could identify the record, he said, they would win a free trip for two to Fiji.

One woman called at the station to collect her tickets and two more telephoned. Although only three people tried to collect, it is believed the hoaxer may have telephoned others who failed to identify the record. A message has been broadcast warning listeners about the hoaxer and the police have been informed.
