POSITIVE RUGBY

One of the most pleasing features of the first three rounds of the senior Rugby competition has been the more positive attitude adopted by most club sides, particularly in the backs.

Last year the competition had a drab start when points from penalties far outnumbered tries but so far this season the try scoring has almost doubled. The figures for tries this season with last year’s figures in parentheses are:—First round 31 (27); second round 32 (16); third round 36 (18).

Christchurch, which has scored 14 tries in three matches is well clear of the next team. Suburbs, with 10 and University A, University B, Lincoln College and Sihrley which have scored nine tries.

Merivale-Papanui has scored only one try in its three matches and Marist and Sydenham show only a slight improvement on this with two and three tries respectively.
