Boy Stole £5250 In Money, Goods
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 5. A 16-y ear-old boy who committed four burglaries in Wellington involving goods and money worth more than £5250, was sentenced to borstal training by Mr R. D. Jamieson, S.M., in the Children’s Court today.
He had admitted the charges at an earlier hearing.
Goods and money worth £1753 had not been traced. The Magistrate said he could not consider gaol. “The idea of sending a boy of 16 years from Children’s Court to prison, a boy who has had no previous offences, is to my mind unthinkable on a charge of this sort.”
He discounted detention also, as this was not intended for a boy of this type, said the Magistrate. Remarking that borstal was the only course left, he sentenced accordingly.
“I am concerned about you, because it looks as if you could go a long way if you keep out of trouble.” “I want you to be able to accept what is happening as unavoidable in view of what you have done.
