ADDINGTON MARKET Ready Sale For Beef-bred Steers

A draft of beef-bred steers, aged 20-months to two years and a half, from the St. James’s station, met a ready sale at the Addington saleyards yesterday. Totalling 266 head, the cattle were in good forward condition, and sold for an average of £42 3s 6d a pen.

The adult store cattle entry yeseterday numbered 731 head, compared with 421 a week ago. The yarding included more than 250 stationbred cows, most of them already mated, and they met a steady sale. Fatteners throughout Canterbury took a strong interest in the annual draft of St. James Station cattle, the sale opening with the first pen selling for £4B 3s 6d. Twelve pens of the station’s Aberdeen Angus cross steers sold from £3B 3s 6d to £4B 3s 6d, and eight of the pens sold at more than £4O. Six pens of Aberdeen Angus steers sold from £37 8s 6d to £46 8s 6d, while the five pens of Herefords sold from £35 13s 6d to £46 18s 6d. Four of these five pens sold at £4l or more. Others Easier The St. James steers sold well up to recent good rates for the larger station-bred lines, but the remainder of the steer yarding, which had been sold first, was £1 a head or so easier than last week. It appeared to be a case of many fatteners waiting to bid on pens in the St. James draft. The best of the adult steers, of which there were only a few, sold to £46 17s 6d, while forward-conditioned steers, aged about 20 months, met a steady sale, prices ranging from £37 8s 6d to £42 3s 6d for the best, with others down to £3l 18s 6d. Several pens of Friesian steers were offered, and the largest sold from £37 18s 6d to £4l 13s 6d, with two-year-olds selling from £3O 3s 6d to £33 3s 6d.

A pen of Friesian heifers, aged about 20 months, sold for £33 18s 6d, while Aberdeen Angus heifers, of which there were onlv two pens, sold to £3O 18s 6d. Breeding Cows The breeding cow selection was a greatly improved offering on last week. It included a line of 72 young station-bred Aberdeen Angus cross cows, which met a steady inquiry, selling from £29 3s 6d to £36 18s 6d. All had been mated. Hereford cows, already mated, sold to £36 8s 6d, while unmated cows of the same breed sold from £23 3s 6d to £2B 18s 6d. Sales Included: Steers: J. E. V.
