TOP-CLASS DOUBLE

Pyne’s Fast Times

The New Zealand Empire Games nominee, A. G. Pyne (Canterbury), completed a world-class track double when he recently ran a mile in 4min 2.2 sec—a personal best —and two miles in Bmin 50see within 75min of one another. He achieved this splendid performance while competing for the University of California, Los Angeles, against Oregon University. This was one of the fastest one mile-two mile doubles ever recorded on an outdoor track and a clear indication that Pyne has the strength to compete successfully in both the three miles and mile at Jamaica. The record is held by Pyne’s University of California club-mate, R. Day, who recorded 4min 2.Bsec for the mil j and Bmin 49sec for two miles last season. K. Keino (Kenya) has the only better double performance, and this was achieved on an indoor track. The New Zealand selectors (Messrs J. Borland and C. Thompson) will be notified of Pyne’s times.
