Collectors ‘Going Crazy Over Coins’

(New Zealand Press Association) , MASTERTON, May 5. A Masterton coin collector said today that New Zealand buyers, particularly in provincial centres, seemed to be “going crazy” over coins.

“It may be the pending change-over to decimals that has caused it, but you can pick up a 1935 threepence in Wellington for £lO or £l2, whereas in Masterton on Tuesday someone paid £lB 10s,” he said. He was referring to an auc-

tion held by Mr C. Mac Donal, a partner in the firm of H. M. Morton and Sons. A complete silver set in proof condition of 1935 coins, which included the highly prized Waitangi crown and the threepence, was sold for £345. A complete set of New Zealand coins, including a proof Waitangi crown, sold for £440. Individual coin prices were: 1917 George V half sovereign £4, Queen Elizabeth sovereign £B, 1887 Queen Victoria sovereign £7 10s, 1956 New Zealand threepence (strapless) £2 10s, 1940 New Zealand half-crown (centennial) £9, 1935 New Zealand threepence £lB 10s, 1956 New Zealand penny (strapless) £l5.
