Conveniences
Sir, —Some of the city areas are badly lacking in public conveniences. Moorhouse, Fitzgerald and Bealey avenues show a complete blank, along with the Latimer and Cranmer squares; also the length of Colombo street in Sydenham, for example. Thousands are being spent daily on great road works and parking meters on footpaths, all for the sake of King Traffic. A lot more could be done in various directions by council committees and engineers for the benefit of the ordinary—and increasing—footpadding public.—Yours, etc OLIVER TWIST.
April 17, 1966. [The Town Clerk (Mr C. S. Bowie) replies: “The council is concerned that adequate toilet facilities should be available in the city and suburbs, and as the opportunity
arises suitable sites are sought However, the acquisition of sites in those highdensity areas where public conveniences are lacking presents some problems. The correspondent’s views have been noted and the works and services committee proposes to investigate the provision of further public toilets in areas which are considered to have the highest needs.”]
