TROTTING Mighty Chief Gore Stakes Pick

“The Press" Special Service INVERCARGILL. With a strong contingent of Canterbury horses engaged throughout the programme, the Gore Trotting Club’s autumn meeting today has drawn an outstanding card, with the Gore Invitation Stakes, for trotters, the feature event.

Widespread interest will be shown in the clash between Mighty Chief and Poupette, two of New Zealand’s outstanding trotters. They will meet on level terms in the Invitatoin Stakes. Mighty Chief is selected to win. The weather has been unsettled with rain yesterday and the track will be heavy. The T.A.B. double will be on the Longford Handicap and the Gore Invitation Stakes, for which Grand Finale and Mighty Chief may be the favourites.

Mighty Chief will no doubt try for an all-the-way win in the Gore Invitation Stakes. If he has any advantage on his field at the home turn he should win because the Gore straight is only a little more than a furlong. The last-start winner of the New Zealand Trotting Championship at Addington with something to spare, Mighty Chief has never been in better form and looks set to extend his record today.

Mighty Chief shares the back mark of 36yd with Poupette, runner-up to him in the Trotting Championship, but a shade disappointing at Forbury Park on Saturday. Although forced wide on the home turn she did not run on quite as well as expected and could only manage fifth. She is inclined to stay well back in the early stages of her races and if Mighty Chief adopts front-running tactics, Poupette might be faced with a stiff assignment. Flying Maiden looked to have the Forbury race in safe keeping half a fourlong out, but Doctor Kyle wore her down in the last stride to win by a nose. It was a firstclass effort on the part of Flying Maiden, which will rate a strong prospect. Blundered At Start

She will be bracketed with Ardleigh, which blundered at the start at Forbury. Before that he had accounted for Asia Minor, Free Globe and Flying Maiden in the Trotters’ Consolation race at Addington, and if he get under way would offer a threat. On Forbury running, Queen’s Cord and Asia Minor enter calculations. Queen’s Cord was always handy and after sharing the lead with Uteena near the three furlongs held on well for third. She looks to be approaching peak form.

Asia Minor was one of the tail-enders with half a mile to run and his effort to get up for fourth was good. The remainder of the field look to to safely held, with Trapper the best prospect among them. He was a double winner at the Manawatu meeting last month.

Grand Finale, which has run some good and bad races this season, showed something of his best at Forbury Park when he finished second to Thunderina after covering extra ground. With K. Balloch down to drive him in the Longford Handicap today the Meadow Chief gelding will take some beating. He has shown ability much above average and with reasonable luck in some of his races would have graduated much further than this.

Admire will attempt his third successive win. He was successful at the Central Otago meeting and again at Kurow. His form for the Oamaru trainer, F. Oliver, has shown a sharp improvement

Epona has been withdrawn, but F. E. Newfield still will have a useful bracket in Stanorma and Yankee Dandy. Stanorma recently was placed at Hutt Park. When trained in Southland some of his best efforts were on heavy tracks. Long-Shot Winner

His bracketed mate, Yankee Dandy, was a long-shot winner at Greymouth.

Shadyvale was a sprint winner at Hutt Park last month, but has failed in his two appearances since. He will be coupled with Falstaff, which in spite of his latest

failures, has been a capable pacer on his day. Guyfa finished third behind Thunderina and Grand Finale at Forbury Park and on that run Grand Finale may again hold him safely. Seay Boy finished a fair fifth at Forbury on Saturday and his consistent form on good and bad tracks entitles him to a chance.
