E.L.D.O. Trial Test ‘Highly Successful ’
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) ADELAIDE, May 2. Britain’s Blue Streak strained at its moorings on the Woomera rocket range this morning in a static test which delighted European Launcher and Development Organisation officials.
The E.L.D.O. representative, Colonel J. Dutton, said: “As
far as we can see, the firing was completely successful. We are very pleased.” The test firing was delayed two and a half hours as minor delays developed during the count-down. Colonel Dutton said a delay of such a short duration during a static firing trial was “success of a high order.” Officials said the test showed that the Blue Streak was fit for its flight, scheduled to take place at Woomera on May 19. The Blue Streak .s the first stage of the E.L.D.O. rocket Europa I and takes up 61ft of the Europa I’s 104 ft length. Dummy second and third stages will be substituted on May 19 for the French and West German rockets which are eventually to complete the Europa rocket. The nosecone is Italian-designed.
