Strain On Hostels

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 1. The tremendous increase in membership in recent years had put a strain on hostel facilities, said the annual report to the New Zealand Youth Hostels’ Association yesterday. “If this trend continues at the same rate hostel facilities could soon reach breaking point,” said the national secretary, Mr F. A. Betts. The report said the assocition’s membership increased by nearly 25 per cent in the last year to 8760. The ratio of beds to members was one bed to every 9.5 members. “If the association is to continue growing we must increase our efficiency, and get increased financial support from the community and the Government.” said Mr Betts.
