ELLESMERE OPENING
Bad Timing For Shooters Work had begun on the opening of Lake Ellesmere to the sea, said Mr A. T. Bell at a meeting of the North Canterbury Catchment Board yesterday. The lake should be open tomorrow. “It seems to be unfortunate that the level at which we open the lake each year occurs always just a few days before the shooting season starts,” said Mr Beil. “Shooters have already pegged their sites, end when the lake goes out they will have to shift them. There will be criticism of the board, but it can’t be helped.” Mr Bell said the board had once tried opening the lake at a lower level, and “things had gone wrong.” The duck-shooting season will open next Saturday. Blgeon Race.—More than 1000 pigeons will be liberated in Palmerston North today to compete in the Great Australasian Futurity Stakes. The dstance to be covered by the birds is 245 miles.
