N.Z. Wool Dearer At London Sales

(N Z. Press Association— Copyrljhfl LONDON, April 28. Keen and spirited bidding marked the opening of the London April wool sales today, and competition was strongly maintained throughout. London Wool Brokers and the London agency of the New Zealand Wool Commission in their joint report say that, compared with March closing rates, greasy halfbreds and fine crossbreds were 2| per cent higher.

Good-style medium crossbreds showed little change, but average styles eased up to 2} per cent Greasy crossbred lambs, in wide demand, improved to 5 per cent.

Values for scoured merinos, halfbreds and fine crossbreds were 21 per cent higher. Medium crossbred fleece and second shears remained very flrm. but skirtings advanced 2 J per cent and lambs 2j to 5 per cent. All slipes were a very firm market with prices for halfbred lambs moving in sellers’ favour and up to 2} per cent higher. The 12,000 bales of New Zealand wool in the sale comprised 4.500 greasy, 4,600 scoured and 3,700 slipes. The greasies were mainly average to good average crossbreds and the selection included a good proportion of lambs. Most woolgrowing areas were represented, but Gisborne, East Coast and Wellington brands were in best supply. A comprehensive offering of scoureds provided an excellent range of bulky and short wools in qualities from medium crossbred to fine merino, some stylish merino and halfbred clips from South Island districts being a feature of the offering. These were generally a little sounder than of late and of good colour but cap ried slight touches of seed. The selection of slipes was made up largely of woolly lambs with pullings covering November, December, January and February months, of production. Sheep wools were rather scarce.
