RACING “Mudlarks” Suited By Nelson Track

(From Our Own Reporter) t NELSON. The true “mudlarks” will have conditions to their liking at Nelson today. Rain, which began on Thursday night and continued throughout yesterday, has thoroughly soaked the Richmond Park track.

As further rain is predicted the first day of the Nelson Jockey Club’s annual meeting is bound to be held on real winter ground. Lucky Soo, Birthright and General Gilbert, tiie only runners weighted at more than 8-0, have already dropped out of the Nelson Cup field. Dark Seaman, Stageland and Mess- I maid have also been scratched. This has allowed Bell Man, Tax Evader and Clipper to re-enter the field, They are capable light-weights which prefer easy ground. Bell Man and Tax Evader, In particular, will have solid backing after sound runs on I a rain affected track at Blenheim last Tuesday. Bell M.n was the Bellborough Handicat> winner and Tax Evader was the best of his rivals. The change in the weather and the ground could also bring Certain into favour. This Washdyke-trained lightweight raced badly on the first two days at Blenheim, but there he was competing on a firm and fast track. He is a good stayer and a noted winter performer. Scratchings have left Arakhan to lead the field out. He has shown his best form in the past on top of the ground, but being a son of Sabaean he should handle this track. The change also brought doubts about Golden Prince. He is another which has gone his best races on firm and fast tracks. But he was worked on the track yesterday morning and from all accounts went well in the ground. The going is unlikely to hamper Grand Coeur or Bon Voyage, which are both fairly useful all-rounders. Outside of Bell Man the best of the others from the South Island in this type of going could be the Invercar-gill-trained Lorastan and So Lovely, which is trained on the course. At Long Odds Te Aro, which would have probably been the popular fancy for the Buller Handicap, second leg of the main double, could now be at long odds. At Blenheim last Tuesday she could not handle the soft track at all. Might is another which will not be at ease in the going. But late yesterday Te Aro and Might were still in the field, the only scratchings being Lucky Son and Mr Bud. The versatile Sabell might now be the favourite. He won last Saturday on a firm track at Blenheim, but is also very capable in winter ground. If open sprint form at Blenheim on Tuesday proves a reliable guide, Royal Admiral (first), Dark Seaman (second) and Cambeg, which was fourth, should be the hardest for Sabell to beat. The double for course patrons will be run on the Beehive Hack Hurdles and

the Waimea Improvers’ Handicap William David and Bandarshar would have been strong hopes from Canterbury stables in the first leg if the ground had remained firm, but now Llandudno, which has previously gone well in soft ground, might be the best chance.

Darnburgh which ran badly on soft ground at Blenheim on Tuesday, has dropped out of the Waimea Improvers’ Handicap. That True or Mr Jones could now dominate second-leg betting. 11.30 am
