Young Roman Catholics To Mark Anniversary

The training of church and community leaders skilled in meeting people and the exchanging of ideas and views is the aim of the Christchurch Catholic Youth Movement which celebrates its 21st anniversary next month. The movement has been active in the Christchurch diocese since 1944. The movement has 450 members and is having a recruiting drive. There are two full-time workers, Mr R. A. Consedine, the boys’ president, and Miss J. M. ilcCorkindale, the girls'. It offers young Roman Catholics an opportunity to study their faith more closely through discussions and to put it into practice in community activities, such as C.0.R.5.0. and undertaking projects with other youth groups.

The movement is based on the principle of the Young Christian Workers as founded by Cardinal Cardijn, of Belgium, in 1924, and which has now spread to 114 countries.

Besides offering leadership training, the movement offers opportunity for social activities ranging from dances and parties to car rallies and organised sports including basketball, football and table tennis.

The two main features of the 21st anniversary celebrations will be a concelebrated Mass at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament-at 5.45 p.m. on May 24 at which the preacher will be the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby;) and an anniversary ball on May 25.
