13 TEAMS IN GOLF
Women’s Tourney On the basis of handicaps, Canterbury will put its strongest team into the field for this year's women's provincial Russell Grace golf tournament. Miss S. Grigg is on scratch, Miss M. Ensor and Miss C. Sullivan are on three. Miss S. Boag is on four and Mrs J. Lees on five. The contest will be decided at the Tahunanui links, Nelson, next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Thirteen teams are competing in the matchplay event. Last year at Hamilton, Canterbury finished seventh, but the team has good prospects of finishing in a higher position this time. Misses Sullivan. Grigg and Ensor played particularly well under matchplay conditions at the recent Canterbury women’s championships at Shirley. A stern test faces Canterbury at the start of the tournament for its first round opponent is Hawke’s BayPoverty Bay, holder of the trophy. Hawke’s Bay has retained its successful players of last season, even to the same playing order, and will be diffcult to beat. Miss Grigg, as No. 1 player for Canterbury, will have a number of hard battles against accomplished opponents. They include Mrs I. Bull (nee Harrison), of Otago, Miss N. White (Auckland), Mrs N. D. Cullen (Southland) and her rival of long standing, Miss B. Stafford (South Canterbury). Canterbury’s draw is:— Tuesday, Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay and Otago: Wednesday, Wellington and South Canterbury: Thursday, Auckland and Southland.
