SCHOOLS SOCCER
No Support For Cup
Christchurch schools will not take part in a national schools soccer tournament to be run on the lines of the senior soccer competition in New Zealand, the Chatham Cup.
Recently, the New Zealand Junior Football Association wrote to the headmasters of all secondary schools in New Zealand inviting them to participate in the competition, which the association hopes to get under way by the end of next month. The headmaster of Riccarton High School, Mr J. L. Gainsford, who is secretary of the Christchurch Secondary •Schools’ Principals Association, said yesterday that his association had discussed the letter on Wednesday. "We agreed that we did not wish to enter the competition but we might be interested in competing in odd tournaments in different centres,” said Mr Gainsford. “It was felt that schools w ere not the places to encourage the pot-hunting element in sport. The game is the thing, not the glory attached to it or the suggestion of being at the top. “We would support holiday soccer tournaments played in various centres where schools can get together, such as adopted by hockey.”
