Better View Still Wanted From Rail-Cars
The South Island Publicity Association will renew its efforts to get better observation facilities on the Christ-church-Hokitika rail-car. It will ask the Railways Department for the fifth time in four years to consider fitting the rail-car with either observation domes or glass panels between the driver’s compartment and the passenger cabin. Mr W. H. Martin (Westport) said a glass partition would enable passengers to see the scenery far ahead as well as from the sides of the cars. Rail-cars in Japan so fitted gave passengers excellent views.
Mr A. C. Brassington said the matter had been raised with local railway managers on four occasions in the last four years. Each time, the manager had been about to retire and nothing had been done.
“Now we have a young stationmaster who might help us. We have had reports about rail-cars from Mr Roger Lascelles in London, and there is no reason why we can’t have them on the Coast line.
“I hope the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) will bend his mind and his will and look into this,” he said.
