RHODESIA STILL AWAITING NEWS
(N Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) SALISBURY, April 29. Rhodesians today look to their Prime Minister (Mr lan Smith) to break his official silence on the proposed informal talks with Britain.
They expect a major speech when Mr S nith opens the Central African trade fair—Rhodesia’s commercial shop window —at Bulawayo. The talks, announced by Mr Wilson, will seek a basis for negotiation on the crisis since Rhodesia’s breakaway from Britain last November. Mr Smith’s only comment so far has been “wait until we get around the table.” Most white Rhodesians echo this “let’s wait and see,” but their general reaction to the talks proposal has been relief. The talks are expected to be held at a secret place with no announcement of the date or of the officials taking part. The oil lift to Zambia through Tanzania has been building up again during the last fortnight, officials in Dar-es-Salaam said today. A total of 830,000 gallons of oil was carried by road, rail, air and lake routes in the week April 16 to 23, the lat-
est period for which figures are available.
