Govt. Considering ’Quake Legislation
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 29. Proposals to amend the Municipal Corporations Act to give local authorities extended power to deal with buildings that might be considered dangerous in the event of an earthquake were still being considered by the Government, the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Seath) said today.
“While there is general agreement that some action should be taken to clarify the present position, considerable difficulty is being experienced in finding a suitable legislative formula which would be both reasonable and practicable in its application,” Mr Seath said. “Discussions are continuing on the proposed wording of the legislation but, until this matter has been finally considered by the Cabinet, I
am not in a position to comment further.” Mr Seath was commenting on a recent statement by the president of the Wellington, Taranaki and Marlborough Clerical Workers’ Union (Mr E. D. McGuire), criticising lack of action regarding buildings which could be dangerous in the event of an earthquake.
