Japanese Emperor Has 65th Birthday

The gates of Japan’s Imperial Palace opened to the public today and thousands of people flocked in to pay their respects to Emperor Hirohito on his sixtv-fifth birthday.
The Emperor, though reported in excellent health, did not make his usual appearance in acknowledgement because of palace building work in progress. For the visitors, today was one of the two days »
the palace grounds are open to them. The Emperor, a distinguished amateur biologist, is hard at work between official duties on his eighth book. This morning, Crown Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko, with other members of the Imperial family, Cabinet ministers and diplomats, called on the Emperor to congratulate him. The Prime Minister (Mr Eisaku Sato) and other dignitaries were to lunch at the I palace. The Emperor's birthday, I which is also Honours Day, ■is the first of three special holidays in the coming “Golden Week." May 3 marks the anniversary of Japan’s postwar Constitution, and May 5 held as Children’s Day.
