Poor Form In First Round Of Women’s Basketball

Poor combination and a degree of inaccuracy were revealed when the first women’s basketball competition games were played on Saturday.

West A, the winner of last year’s senior competition, beat St. Nicholas, with the help of an übiquitous captain. Technical, gaining strength in the second half, beat Teachers’ College, and New Brighton beat West B, which was severely handicapped by six new players and an unfamiliar combination. Sacred Heart had a bye. Results:— West A 30, St. Nicholas 16. Technical 44, Teachers’ College 22. New Brighton 38, West B 4. West A v. St. Nicholas West's win was aided by the strong, capable play of its new captain, H. Hutton, who played centre, and by the accuracy of goal shoot, L. King. The team has several new members this year, but has managed to maintain the strong form which brought it to first position last year. Because of poor positional play and little combination, St. Nicholas was far too slow. With a big effort by the captain, L. Weastell, the team attempted to tighten its attack, but was too late to be effective. Referee: Mrs B. Little. Technical v. Teachers’ College Strong quick passing from Technical, which persevered throughout the game, held well against the long inaccurate passes of Teachers’ College. The half-time score was 17-14. In the second half, Teachers’ College improved, but failure in combination was still evident. The positional play of both teams was equal throughout the first half, but Teachers’ College failed as the game progressed. There was some excellent work by goalies on both sides, by D. McGregor for Teachers’ College and by J. Kimber and S. Norman for Technical. Technical was also aided by some hard work on the part of the defence, B. Rowe. Referee: Mrs A. Morgan. New Brighton v. West B New Brighton early establish-

ed itself as the superior team and West, with extremely untidy combination play, lost ground quickly. By half-time the score was l#-2. West had no control in the forward third, and even when the ball reached West’s end, the inaccuracy of the goalies was a further hindrance. West has obviously lost much form since last year, when it did very well in senior competition. However, only one player, S. Drayton, has remained from last year’s team. Referee:: Mrs B. Ditford.
