SUPPORT WANTED

Competitions Society

Although the Christchurch Competitions Society was making an effective effort towards the cultural standing of the city, it lacked support from the business community and the general public, the society’s secretary (Mr G. L. Bradbury) said yesterday. Mr Bradbury said financial difficulties forced the society into recess about seven years ago and although it was revived, the same problems were again confronting it Entries for this year’s competitions, which start on May 7 and end on May 14, are about the same as last year. Entries have come from all over the South Island and from as far north as Auckland. “Christchurch and Auckland are now the two premier competitions in the country,” Mr Bradbury said. For the first time there will be a violin class in the instrumental section. Apart from this, there have been little changes. The judges are:— Speech and drama, Miss F. King, Nelson; vocal, Miss M. Atkfnson, Palmerston North; instrumental, Mr O. Harris. Auckland; ballet and tap dancing, Miss D. Thomas, Lower Hutt; national Highland dancing, Miss N. Thompson, Nelson; modelling, Mrs J. Brinkers, Christchurch. The competitions will be held at the Lutheran Hall (speech); Canterbury Museum theatrette (vocal): New High School Old Boys’ Hall (instrumental); Civic Theatre (ballet and tap dancing); D.I.C. (modelling).
