Mosquitoes Sucked

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 19. Hanging 20ft up a tree on Great Barrier Island sucking mosquitoes into a tube the Dominion Museum entomologist, Mr R. Ordish, obtained specimens of an unusual type of mosquito needed for virus research at Otago University. “The species breeds only in a grass like piphyte growing on the trunks of trees in the bush on Great Barrier Island.” said Mr Ordish today. “Water runs down the stems of the plant and accumulates round the stalks." Mr Ordish said he managed to suck the mosquitoes' into a plastic tube without swallowing any. He spent a fortnight on the island with biology students and staff from Wellington Teachers' College and also collected cave wetas. katipo spiders and various insects.
