Cardigan Bay’s Easy Victory At Yonkers
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) NEW YORK. New Zealand-bred Cardigan Bay romped to an easy victory on Thursday night in the 100,000-dollar International Pace at Yonkers Raceway.
The brilliant 10-year-old gelding took the lead at the six-furlong mark of the 12furlong race and just breezed the rest of the journey to win by about five lengths in 3min 4 2-ssec.
American - bred Murdoek Hanover was second in a photo over Idaho, of New Zealand. American-bred Adios Marches was fourth. The time was three-fifths of | a second slower than the record for the International, set
' by Overtrick two years ago. Cardigan Bay, with Stanley Dancer driving a confident : race behind the 1/5 (on) fav- ! ourite, was content to let Idaho set the pace for the first six furlongs, staying back in third place behind Orbiter as the three New Zealand- ; bred horses in the race monopolised the front end. Two Lengths Ahead When Dancer moved, Cardigan Bay shot to the front and easily opened up a twolength advantage which he widened during the run 1 through the short straight of 1 the four-furlong Yonkers oval.
In taking the winner’s share of the 50,000 dollars Cardigan Bay increased his earnings since arriving in the United States two years ago to 435,000 dollars. His total earnings i are 536,981 dollars. ' Cardigan Bay paid 2.60 dob
lars (for a 2 dollar bet) to win in the pari-mutuels. He paid the minimum possible, 2.20 dollars, for both place (first or second) and show (first, second and third). Murdock Hanover returned 2.80 dollars to place and 2.20 dollars to show, while Idaho paid 2.20 dollars to show. Murdock Hanover’s official margin over Idaho was a head. Bobby Camper drove Murdock Hanover, and George Sholty drove Idaho. Following the fourth horse, Adios Marches, in order were Pocomoonshine, the extreme outsider, Adora’s Dream, Orbiter and Cold Front The first half-mile was paced in 1:03 2/5 and the mile in 2:04. Thursday's triumph was his nineteenth win in 37 American starts. He has had 10 seconds and four thirds, being unplaced only four times.
