SYDNEY CUP
Prince Grant Easily (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SYDNEY. The champion New Zealandbred gelding, Prince Grant, won the £16,000 Sydney Cup easily over two miles at Randwick yesterday. Prince Grant won by an official margin of one length and threequarters, but was easing past the post, and observers said he could have won by four or five lengths if pushed.
Second was another New Zea-land-bred horse. High Principle, with Gin and Bitters one length and a quarter behind third. The win gave the leading jockey, G. Moore, the Sydney Easter double —the Doncaster Handicap and the Sydney Cup. He won both races on three-year-olds.
Prince Grant jumped quickly at the start and soon took the lead. He settled into third place behind Hyde and Olympus after a furlong, having worked his way into a good position on the fence.
The New Zealander, Apa, moved up to fourth about the mile and a half and the field accelerated.
Prince Grant hit the front as soon as he entered the long Randwick straight and raced away to a four-length lead. Three-quarters of a furlong from home, there was no doubt that he would win and G. Moore allowed the colt to coast past the post. High Principle was clearly second and Gin and Bitters got the better of Striking Force in a photo-finish for third. Result: SYDNEY CUP, £16,000; 2m.
