ZAMBIAN STRIKE
Some Miners Working (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LUSAKA, April 11. Most of Zambia’s African miners on the copperbelt reported for work today after a fortnight-long wildcat strike over disparities between European and African wage rates. Miners turned up at five of the seven copper mines after yesterday’s big publicity offensive by the Government, aimed at ending the stoppages.
A spokesman of the AngloAmerican Corporation, one of the main mine owners, said there were large turn-outs at the company’s Nchanga and Bancroft mines, but workers at the Rhokana mine were still striking. Three of the mines owned by the Roan Selection Trust were also working again. Men at the Mufulira mine were still on strike and so were workers at the Ndola capper refinery.
