‘February Schooling Unfair To Children’

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 8. It is unfair on children to be “cooped in classrooms” during a hot February, the Auckland Federation of School Committees believes.

The Federation has called a conference of education bod ies to discuss an alternative system of school terms and holidays. The president (Mr V. J. Clarke) said today: “We hope we can come up with some definite proposal, and perhaps try a pilot scheme somewhere. “The object is to have child ren on holiday while the weather is at its hottest. February, for instance, was so warm it was not fair to the children to be cooped in classrooms. They should have been on the beach." One proposal is that schools should have only two terms a year and that holidays should include February. The Auckland Education Board, secondary school boards, the Auckland Headmaster’s Association and the Educational Institute have agreed to take part in discussions.
