Eels For Export

(N.Z Press Association) HAMILTON, April 8. A new eel-freezing factory, which may export up to 200 tons of frozen eels to Europe in its first year, will open in Ngaruawahia on April 15. The 1400 sq ft factory will be run by a company soon to be formed, to be known as Waikato Ventures, Ltd. The managing-director of the company, Mr G. Salt, said today that first-grade eels would be exported to European

countries where they were considered a great delicacy. During the last three years he had sent trial shipments of New Zealand eels to his markets, which had provided first-rate reports.

Between 60 and 70 people were ready to start catching eels as soon as the plant opened.

“Eels could become a primary product,” he said, “but we realise there are many years of hard work ahead before this can be so.”
