GIPPSLAND SHELF

Evaluation To Take Time (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, April 5. The president and general manager of Esso Exploration Australia, Mr J. H. Hamlin, confirmed today that it would be several months before the commercial significance of the Gippsland shelf No. 4 well could be determined. The full evaluation of the well will depend on detailed analysis of the gas and oil flows, he said. A spokesman for B.H.P. said today the company would not make a decision on whether to take a 50 per cent interest in the No. 4 well until the assessment of the field was completed. B.H.P. has already elected to take a 50-50 interest with Esso in the Gippsland shelf No. 1 well. This well has been declared commercial.
