FARMHOUSE GUTTED

Brigade Caught In Traffic Jam (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 8. The cars of dozens of onlookers caused a traffic jam which delayed fire-engines called to a blazing house on a farm in Flat Bush road, Papatoetoe, on Thursday night. Two appliances from Otahuhu and one each from Ellerslie, Manurewa and Papatoetoe were all held up while the flames raced through the old two-storey building. One fire-engine was completely cut off by the traffic attracted by the sight of the blaze and was powerless to assist in the fire-fighting. The farmhouse, which was 300 yards from the road and 650 yards from the nearest water, was a total loss, firemen managed to save a nearby cow-shed and washhouse. The house was owned by Mr P. N. Holloway, a former Labour Cabinet Minister. The occupant, a sharemilker, was not present when the fire started. The cause of the fire is not known.
