50-1 Outsider Downs Aintree Favourite

GV.Z.P..4. Reuter—Copyright)

AINTREE (England).

Anglo, a 50-1 outsider, won the £22,000 Grand National at Aintree on Saturday by 20 lengths in the hands of T. Norman, who was having his first ride in the race.

Second in the field of 47 was the hot favourite Freddie, which at 11-4 was one of the shortest-priced contenders on record. The Scottish-trained favourite also finished second last year.

Five lengths away third was the English horse Forest Prince, which tried to make all the running and weakened only after crossing the last fence. He started at 100/7. The winner was trained by the former champion jockey. F. Winter, who trained the American winner of last year’s race. Jay Trump. It is many years since a trainer won the race twice in succession.

Only a handful finished the gruelling course of four miles and 486 yards. Fourth was The Fossa, fifth Jim’s Tavern and Sixth Gale Force, from Ireland, which had been prominent for most of the way. The Japanese contender, Fujino-O, failed to show up, and Highland Wedding, the third favourite, failed to stay. Bookmakers were delighted with the result. They said the defeat of Freddie had saved them £500,000. One London man had Anglo doubled with the Lincoln Handicap winner. Riot Act, and won more than £20,000. Two riders were taken to hospital for examination —D. Mould, the rider of Kapeno. and F. Carroll, who rode Flamecap. Neither was badly

hurt. No horse was reported to be seriously injured. The early leaders were Forest Prince, Willow King and Quintin Bay, with Freddie also prominent. Beecher’s the first time claimed only two victims. Packed Home and .Popham Down.

At the ninth fence Forest Prince was joined by Kapeno ' and Greek Scholar, with Quintin Bay alongside them. As they crossed the water after completing the first circuit Forest Prince led Greek Scholar, Kapeno and Freddie. This was the order as they approached Beecher’s the second time round.

Kapeno fell and brought down Greek Scholar, leaving Forest Prince with a clear lead. He was soon pressed by Freddie, Highland Wedding and Anglo, with Quintin Bay still there. For the last five fences there was a duel between Anglo and the tiring Forest Prince. Freddie’s weight was slowing him on the soft goiing. As they came to the last , fence Anglo took a slight lead, and although Freddie found enough to take second place he could make no impression

on the bottom-weight, Anglo. The finishing order was: Anglo, Freddie. Forest Prince, The Fossa. Jim’s Tavern, Quintin Bay, Norther, Highland Wedding, Vulcano, Gale Force, Big George and Loving Record.
