Cup Lid With Ransom Note
A ransom demand for £15,000 and the lid of the stolen World Cup have been received by the chairman of the English Football Association. Mr J. Mears.
The lid was reported to be in perfect condition.
The cup, although intrinsically worth far less, is insured for twice the amount demanded in the ransom note.
The note was reported to have said the lid was sent to prove its authors had the cup.
“You will receive instructions later telling you what to do with the money,” the note said.
On Saturday. Edward Walter Bletchley, a 47-year-old London dock worker, was charged in a London police court with having stolen the cup.
The trophy was taken last Sunday from Central Hall, Westminster, where it was on display at an exhibition of rare stamps connected with sport.—P.A.-Reuter.
