Record Attendance At Malvern Show

A substantial increase in the number of entries in the horse section, higher gate takings, and a much improved layout of the show grounds all contributed to make the Malvern Agricutural and Pastoral Association’s 60th annual show a success on Saturday.

The use of four rings helped push the large programme of ring activities through with a minimum of delays which pleased the competitors. The seemingly high standard of horses, cattle and sheep pleased the judges, and the increase of £27 in gate-takings delighted the show’s organisers.

This year there were 2506 entries for the show—l 4 fewer than at the last one. The largest increase was in the horse entries—BB2 compared with 794 in 1965.

There were fewer cattle <lO4 compared with 149), but more sheep and dogs (386 and 27 compared with 351 and 16).

Gate takings were £2OB, compared with £lBl. The organisers said the show attracted its largest crowd. As well as ring events there was a large display of agricultural machinery and vehicles. The vehicles on parade depicted a historical cavalcade from the earliest to the latest. Robin Deans’ first plough, and the first auto header used in Canterbury, a large loader and transporter, a traction engine and hedger were on display. For the young there was a well patronised side-show alley, and for the first time a ferris wheel which was packed to capacity throughout the afternoon

The most popular moneyraising sideshow was the bowling or putting for money event. A 10s note and a £1 note were tacked to the ground and the “experts” at either game were invited, at a small charge, to see if they could bowl or putt a ball on to either note to win. Music was provided by the well groomed St. Andrew s College Pipe Band. The president of the association (Mr P. G. Morrison) welcomed visitors. The Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) congratulated the organisers on the excellent layout of the grounds, spoke of the high number of horse entries, and congratulated • both winners and losers. PONIES PRAISED ' » The Echo Challenge Cup for ' the boy or girl rider under 18 attracted a really excellent "class, said the judge (Mrs G. D. Stevenson, of Southland). She " »a.d the five first-placed ponies ' were separated by only one point and about 10 riders had only five points between them. • The over all standard of the ' e/ass was very high. The win- „ tier. Miss Mary Watkinson’s Aqaba, was only one point from obtaining the maximum. Mrs , Stevenson said. ’ The hacks and hunters’ judge „ tMr L. J. McLaughlan) said the , animals were very well man.tiered and turned out. The . Standard was very high and . hianners of the horses particu- • Tarly good. Mr McLaughlin said the paced jnd mannered hack class was exceptional. “The placed horses jrere extremely hard to separ • ate. I was waiting for them to ■ make mistakes but they just • wouldn’t,” he said. . Mr D. Robertson said the fat classes were all very good ‘ for this time of the year. The ’standard was uniformly high. ’He said some of the pet lambs “were the best he had judged. r • Mr Robertson said all the fat M «heep were in very good order. • Championship awards were: Horses ’• Hack: Miss Shirley Mahon’s Robbie Burns: reserve: Mrs S. .
