Open Letter To President

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, March 27. An open letter to President Johnson, accusing him of war crimes in Vietnam, was carried down Queen street today by 200 protest marchers.

The letter, which was written by the Auckland Progressive Youth Movement, was pushed under the main door of the A.M.P. building, where the United States Consul, Mr David Wilson, has offices in Auckland.

The march began at Myers Park at 4.30 p.m. at the end of a two-hour protest meeting organised by the Auckland Peace for Vietnam Committee. Many of the marchers carried anti-American placards, but the march was peaceful. The marchers dispersed quickly after the letter was pushed under the door. A member of the youth committee said a copy of the letter would be posted to the consul.

About 800 people attended the protest meeting in the park. Eight speakers, including trade unionists, clergymen, a lawyer, a university lecturer and a youth move-

ment speaker, opposed the Vietnam War and any New Zealand commitment in Vietnam.

A resolution demanding a peaceful settlement of the Vietnam conflict according to the 1954 Geneva Agreement, and calling for the withdrawal of all New Zealand troops in Vietnam, was carried.
