Miss Shipston Beats Two Champions

Two hours after her national medley display at the Centennial Pool on Saturday afternoon, Tui Shipston was demonstrating her mastery’ of individual strokes at the Wharenui Coronation Pool.

Competing’ in an invitation television carnival, she beat the New Zealand girls’ butterfly champion. Jennifer Halsey, and the Canterbury girls’ 110 yd freestyle title and record-holder, Linsey Falk, in each of their specialist events.

Miss Shipston's butterfly time of Imin 16.2 sec was better than both the Canterbury junior and senior records, and o.Bsec faster than the time tn which Miss Halsey won her gold medal at Napier last month. Matching these fine swims were the efforts of A. B. Kindred, in the under-16 boys’ 220 yd freestyle, and Catherine Whiting, in the under-12 girls’ 11 Ojd freestyle. Both swam brilliantly: Kindred’s welljudged race produced a time 2.ssec faster than Lindsay Furness's Canterbury record, while Miss Whiting was a full second faster than her own provincial under-12 mark. None of these fine times will find a place in the record book, however, for Canterbury figures must be set in a long course pool. The length of the Coronation Pool is only 36 2-3 yards. Miss Halsey looked certain to win the butterfly event when she held a lead of a yard and a half with one length of the pool remaining. She finished well enough, too, recording a time equal to the Canterbury’ record she holds jointly with Misses Shipston and Falk —but Miss Shipston had touched about a yard ahead of her.

In the freestyle race. Miss Shipston won by a similar margin from Mi&s Falk, and was one

second outside Miss Falk’s record. Jill Nielson swam furiously for 50yds. then drifted back to third place. The boys’ 220 yd freestyle was a carbon copy of the New Zealand final. Mark Kindle set the pace over the first 110 yd, reaching half-way In the good time of 63sec. Then Kindred took over, his powerful stroke sweeping him to the front and making him the winner by about six yards. Kindle just beat Furness for second place, with Brian Mustchin a good fourth. There were few finer sights at the carnival than Miss Whiting’s crawl style and her tumble turn technique. This 11-year-old girl's Imin l.l.Osec for 110 yd was more than Ssec better than the winning times in the under-12 boys' and under-14 girls’ races, and it would have brought her home third in the under-16 girls' field.

Times set in the Dominion Speedo teleprinter finals earlier in the season were bettered by several of the younger swimmers. Michael Lee and Jaynie Parkhouse, tn the under-10 freestyle races, and Mark Lewis (backstroke) and Jocelyn Hay (breaststroke) in the under-12 section, beat the winning teleprinter times, while Brent Lewis, the boy who won three Speedo finals, was only o.6sec slower over 110 yd backstroke in the under-10 class.

Two trophies given by the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation for the boy and girl producing the most meritorious performances at the carnival were won by Tui Shipston and Alan Kindred. Mr B. Harris, a member of the board of the corporation, presented the trophies to the winners.
