50 YEARS’ SERVICE

Shipping Co. Employee

[ A Lytlelton man completed 150 years’ service with one [shipping firm at the week-end. IHe is Mr T. J. H. Harkess, of Cressy terrace. Lyttelton, who joined Kinsey and Co. [Ltd., on March 27, 1916. Mr Harkess, who was born in 1901, is a former pupil of Lyttelton West School, and has seen many changes in the waterfront since he began work. In 1921, Mr J. Garrard, manager of Kinsey’s at Lyttelton, put Mr Harkess in charge of the Banks Peninsula trade which meant supervision of the John Anderson and Orewa.

From this developed his long connexion with coastal shipping generally and since then Mr Harkess has specialised in coastal shipping. [ According to Mr Harkess, [one of the greatest changes ion the waterfront in cargo [handling, was the disappearance of the horse which was [replaced by capstans for hauling rail waggons. - Waterfront crane s were another innovation, he said. Originally. ships handled cargo with ship's gear, and, of course, the horses on the wharf. . His record of service will Ibe marked soon at a special function.
