Stylish Mate Runs Well
"The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. Stylish Mate ran a fine trial for tomorrow’s Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes at Woodville yesterday. He covered six furlongs so well that he must appeal as one of the leading candidates for the semi-classic. Other impressive workers included Dark Smudge, which now Is certain to contest the Awapuni Gold Cup. His mile with Sail Away was one of the day’s highlights. Most work was done 35ft out on the course proper where the ground was fast. It was there that Stylish Mate and Jan Eyre ran six furlongs in Imin 16 2-ssec, finishing together at the end of the final three in 39 2-ssec. Stylish Mate will have a change of rider tomorrow when W. D. Skelton will replace N. Eastwood. Dark Smudge ran particularly well in his final trial. He worked into a mile with Sail Away and was joined by Taking Ways at the six. Dark Smudge was half a length ahead of Taking Ways at the line with Sail Away a further five lengths back. His time for the full distance was Imin 47sec, the last six taking Imin 20sec and the final three 40 3-ssec.
