INLAND ROUTE
No Support From A.A.
The Automobile Association (Canterbury) believes that, although there could be a future need for the development of the Molesworth route from Hamner Springs to Nelson, there are more pressing demands elsewhere.
A resolution of the roads, patrols, and service committee to this effect was adopted at a meeting of the association’s council last evening. Mr T. D. Craig had told the committee that the route was a gravel road with some steep climbs and sharp drops. It was a much slower road to Blenheim and not of notable scenic value. In winter there could be problems with snow and ice as were encountered on the Jack’s Pass section which was open for public use.
Mr E. R. Casbolt had told the committee he could not see much gain in having the route open to the public. He thought it would be better to improve, where necessary, existing State highways. He thought the Arthur’s PassOtira Gorge highway had a higher priority.
