Peace Theme Of Campaign

Organisations such as the United Nations functioned to promote world peace but could not ensure it, the Rev. A. R. Lowe said at a “world understanding week” dinner in Christchurch last evening. Forty-eight overseas students from 17 countries attended as guests of the Christchurch South Rotary Club, which arranged the dinner.

“World understanding week” began last Sunday and will end on Saturday. It is sponsored by Rotary International.

Mr Lowe said that if peace and understanding were to exist, desire for them must live in the hearts of ordinary people and too much reliance should not be placed on international organisations and men in high office.

International and racial relations would improve only when prejudice was eradicated, he said.

“History has shown that it is always the human element that fails,” Mr Lowe said. A lot of progress had been made towards better international relations —but it had taken a long time. “Good will must be genuine and continuing,” he said.
