Company’s Application Rejected By Council
The Riccarton Borough Council rejected an application by Fletcher' Industries, Ltd., to start additional building-material industries at the existing Mandeville street factory. The town-planning committee recommended that the application be rejected on the ground that the industries did not conform to the zoning of the industrial A area. The company’s request for approval in principle of the establishment of stramit and Brownbuilt industries in Mandeville street had been held over from the February council meeting to enable councillors to inspect existing plants at Woolston and Penrose, near Auckland. The chairman of the townplanning committee (Cr J. B. Midgley) said that the visits to the two factories had made the councillors fully aware of the possible nuisances which could arise to the detriment of nearby residents from the
proposed industries. Cr. G. A. Franks said he was not a bit surprised by the committee’s recommendation, as the industry would create a dust problem caused by the extensive use of straw in the production of stramit. Side channels in the surrounding streets would become affected
by the straw. Cr. F. R. Longley support- 1 ed the application for the pro- 1 duction of Brownbuilt, an alu- : minium material used for < roofing and allied work. He i
said there would be no noise and no dust problem because of the methods used in handling the product. “I’m quite sure this industry could not cause trouble to anyone in the district,” he said.
Drying Plant The council also rejected an application by J. and W. Jamieson, Ltd. to install a forced-air drying plant on the ground that the present use of the property did not conform to the town plan. A letter signed by six residents of Bartlett street near the factory complained of existing nuisances from smoke and noise and objected to the installation of any more equipment. The engineer (Mr R. Upston) reported that in his opinion the additional noise would not significantly increase the present noise level made by buzzers, saws, and cyclone fans.
Approved The council adopted a recommendation by the townplanning committee that no objection be raised to an application by the Canterbury Seed Company for a specific departure from the district scheme provided that certain conditions be adhered to.
The application is to be heard by the Town and Country Planning Appeals Board. It has been opposed by residents near the company’s premises.
