EARNED TRIP

Sobig For Awapuni

"The Press" Special Service

AUCKLAND.

Sobig dispelled the doubts of his trainer, G. W. B. Greene, on the wisdom of a trip south for the Awapuni Gold Cup on Saturday when he galloped brilliantly on the No. 2 grass at Takanini on Monday morning. With his stablemate, Pheroz Pride, he returned Imin 12 l-ssec for six furlongs. Training gallops are seldom run in such time, even on the No. 2 grass where the going is usually very fast Ridden by G. F. Hughes. Sobig travelled comfortably on the inside of Pheroz Pride fHeaslip) all the way. Earlier Greene had been doubtful whether he could get Sobig ready for Saturday’s race. Afterward he was ready to telephone the owner, Mr G. A. Mitchell, of Palmerston North, to suggest that the trip be undertaken. Both Sobig and Pheroz Pride were booked to leave for the south this afternoon.

Hughes is engaged for Terrific in the Awapuni Gold Cup, and a new rider will have to be found for Sobig. An engagement will probably be made within the next day or two.

Besides Terrific, Hughes will ride Pheroz Pride, and Terrific’s stablemate, Sir Oman, at Awapuni.
