Two-tooth Ewes Sell Well At Coalgate Fair

. Following the pattern set at earlier fairs, prices obtained for all descriptions of sheep at the second Coalgate ewe fair yesterday were generally well in advance of last year.

Nowhere was the rise more marked than in the two-tooth ewe section, where vendors generally obtained rises well in excess of 20s a head on 1965 values.

The rise in the adult ewe section was frequently in excess of £l, but a comparison made with a number of last year’s sales showed it was generally between 16s and 19s.

The yarding totalled 10,531' head, compared with 13,0731 last year. It was made up ‘ of 2165 two-tooth ewes, 5268’ adult ewes. 2163 ewe lambs * 641 wethers, and 294 wether' lambs. The adult sheep came for-1 ward in excellent order, particularly those from ’ high i country station properties. ■ These ewes compared venwell with station lines at I other fairs. In Heavy Condition Some of the ewes from properties bordering the foothills were in very heavy condition—so fat, in fact, as to make some buyers wary. Where four-year-olds at other fairs this season regularly sold from 80s to 90s, the 80s mark for this age of ewe was bettered only once yesterday. However. they sold consistently between 75s and 80s, which, in the case of the high-country ewes, was very good value. This fair was the last of the North and Mid-Canterbury fairs for this season. In contrast with last year, an excellent sale prevailed in the two-tooth ewe section. For their size the sheep were fully up to ruling ewe fair rates. Top price was £5 9s for both Romneys and Corriedales. E. L. and E. P. Rice (Hororata), who are new vendors at the fair, sold a pen of 59 Romneys at this figure, and a pen of 55 at £5 3s 6d, to gain an average of just over £5 6s. E. M. Gray (Gunyah) sold two at £5 4s. and a third at £5 Is, compared with 80s and 70s for two pens last year. F. D. H. Gray <Hororata)' sold a pen of Romneys at £5 4s compared with SSs last vear—a rise of 28s. A. F. McArthur and Sons tSteventon) sold 130 Romneys at £5 ss, and 35 at 90s, compared with 63s and 6Ss 6d last year. in the fine-woolled two-tooth sections, G. H. Grigg fHaldon Pastures) sold 70 Corriedales at £5 9s, and another 70 at £5 Bs. This was an average rise of 27s 6d on two pens sold last year at 80s and 82s. Over 16 pens of two-tooths surveyed yesterday the increases on last fair ranged from 19s to 325, and were generally from 22s 6d to 27s 6d. Adult Ewes Top four-year-old price of the fair was 86s for a pen of 106 annual draft Romneys from Wills and I.e Cren (Snowden), whose best price last year was 60s. E. H. Syme /Grasslands) sold 2*o Corriedales at 78s and 76 at 775, compared with 67s 6d and 53s last year. Coleridge Downs (Lake Coleridge) had a very good sale for 266 halfbreds • t 78s, compared with 61s 6d a

y ear ago. Murchison Brothers sold their four-year-old halfand 725, and the Mount Algidus Station sold pens of 330 halfbreds at /6s 74s 6d and 70s, compared with two pens at 77s 6d and 62s last year. While the Mount Algidus average was only 3s or so better than last year, the average rise for five vendors was 15s. G. H. Gngg obtained his second top price of the fair with a pen of 140 big-framed, earlyshorn five-year-old Corriedales at 82s <6os last year). T. F. Hight (Hazelhurst) sold 123 Corriedales at 71s (49s last year) and J. F. Lilly sold 87 halfbreds at 70s. One of the unexpected prices of the day was paid for a small lot of 24 mixed-aged Corriedales from E. A. Cooney (Darfield). These early-shorn ewes realised 945. Merinos More than 1600 Merino ewes were included in the offering, and with the exception of two pens of one and two-shear ewes, prices were close to those of last fair J. R. Todhunter sold 98 oneshear Merinos for 58s, while h’-s annual draft Merinos sold from 35s to 40s. Mount Algidus Station sold three lots of annual draft ewes from 40s to 48s, compared with 46s for 334 last year. Ewe iambs met a buoyant sale, and prices were often in advance of Addington rates. Rockwood Farm, Ltd. (Hororata), sold 239 Romneys at 75s to 83s 6d. to gain a pen average of 79s Bd, compared with an average of 67s last year. W. E. Tilley (Terrace Downs) sold 178 from 70s 6d to 80s—a pen-average of 78s—compared with an average of just over 60s last year. The greatest increases were shown in the pens of small ewe lambs, as vendor’s top prices this year were generally only 5s or so higher than their top pens last year. A large* proportion of the offering was bought by farmers further down on the plains. There were a number of sales to Ashburton buyers, a number of lots went to the Oxford district and a few went to the Peninsula.
