Writer Blames N.Z. Pitches
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. The failure to make the same impact with attacking cricket in New Zealand as was made in Australia was a matter largely out of England’s control, the “Daily Telegraph’s” cricket writer, Michael Melford, wrote from Hong Kong yesterday.
“It could be argued that earlier declarations in both the first two tests might have prevented New Zealand from holding out. “And less justifiably, that if runs had been made harder for New Zealand last Friday the last test might have been won. Vital catches were dropped in each match,” Melford said. New Zealand’s problems stem from the pitches. “These are generally sluggish, mainly because nearly all cricket in New Zealand, first-class and otherwise, is played on Rugby grounds. “Because of this, young players never learn the freedom of stroke of their Australian counterparts brought
up on faster pitches with a true, generous bounce. Joys of Attack “They never learn the joys of attack, which indeed is often penalised. “A cautious approach is born and develops at the top level into an enormous inferiority complex which expects New Zealand to be beaten and aims only to avert defeat. “An added handicap at present is the local interpretation of the l.b.w. law, which thwarts the spinner and lures the batsman into what must be elsewhere dangerous habits. “These failings are conceded and apologised for with a simple lack of arrogance which is highly refreshing in a cynical, nationalistic world. “This tour brought them very much to light and a new' approach and determination not to be beaten by the handicaps of their native conditions may well come out of it.”
