NATIONAL GALLERY

Defence By Chairman

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 15. The chairman of the National Gallery management committee, Mr G. G. Watson, speaking at the opening of an exhibition of 158 bronze sketches by the sculptor, Jaques Lipchitz, lent by the museum of Modern Art, New York, said that criticism had been voiced recently that the gallery was not intimate enough. The Louvre and other famous art galleries in the world were hardly intimate, he said. The National Art Gallery housed more valuable and extensive collections than any other art gallery in New Zealand, he said. Four or five exhibitions of New Zealand artists’ works were held every year and from these works totalling £5OOO to £6OOO were sold.
