Retired
W. J. Mudford, president of the New Zealand Jockeys’ Association, has retired from race riding and from his position with the association. He is recovering satisfactorily from an operation he underwent in January for a perforated ulcer. During a career of 30 years Mudford had almost 550 wins. Passive, Regoli, Taurangi and Anand were among the best horses he had ridden, he said. A capable and brilliant rider since the time of his indentureship to the Hastings trainer, A. Quinlivan, Mudford was only once suspended. That was when, he said, “I went to sleep on Nereis at Te Aroha and got beaten by Regal Nib.” He was fined, but after an appeal by the stipendiary steward spent six weeks on the sideline. Until the end of the racing season N. B. Holland will be acting president of the association.
