STANMORE ROAD

Give-Way Signs Altered The high accident rate in Stanmore road at its intersection with several side streets had caused concern, the traffic committee told the City Council. Stanmore road was controlled with four give-way signs at the intersections of Cashel/ Hereford, Worcester and Gloucester streets. Motorists were subjected to the. possibility of stopping on four occasions over a distance of 15 chains. The signs did not appear to be having the desired effect of providing a free flow of traffic and reducing accidents. In the section of Stanmore road from Cashel street to River road there had been 26 injury accidents, including a fatality, in 1965. The increase of 10 collisions in a year over the relatively short distance indicated that some remedial action was necessary. The council agreed that the present give-way signs should be removed, and that signs be put in the following streets at their intersections with Stanmore road: Hereford street, Gloucester street, Armagh street, River road, Draper street-Swans road, Alexandra street-Vogel street. It also approved stop signs in Avonside drive at the Stanmore road intersection.
